A town in the Lisbon district in the mid-west of Portugal. It is located about 20 km west-northwest of Lisbon, on the northeastern slope of the Sintra mountain range. It was once a summer resort for the royal family, and has palaces from the 12th to 15th centuries. On one peak stands the 19th-century Pena Palace, modeled after a medieval castle and partially utilizing a 16th-century monastery, and on another peak stands a Moorish (→Berber) fortress. It is the Iberian Peninsula's leading tourist destination. Its scenery, sung in Byron's poetry, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1995. Population: 20,574 (estimated 1981).
