A general term for action films depicting violent gangs in American cities, especially those from the 1920s during the Prohibition era. Early works include J. Sternberg's Gangster Gang (1927), which was made towards the end of the silent era, but the genre flourished in the early talkie era, and produced a succession of films that are now called classic gangster films. These include M. LeRoy's Rico (30), W. Wellman's An Enemy of the People (31), R. Mamoulian's Streets (31), and H. Hawks's Big Bad Gang (32). Actors who played prominent roles include E. Robinson and J. Cagney. The origin of the G-Men film, which depicts the underworld from the prosecution's perspective, is Keeley's G-Men (35). There are also many films depicting the underworld in other countries. In Japan, Akira Kurosawa critically portrayed the image of the yakuza after World War II in films such as Drunken Angel (48). Today it is produced as an entertaining action movie.

アメリカの都市の暴力組織，特に禁酒法時代の 1920年代のものを描くアクション映画の総称。初期作品に無声時代末期の J.スターンバーグの『暗黒街』 (1927) などがあるが，トーキー時代初期に隆盛をきわめ，今日古典的ギャング映画と呼ばれるものが続出した。 M.ルロイの『犯罪王リコ』 (30) ，W.ウェルマンの『民衆の敵』 (31) ，R.マムーリャンの『市街』 (31) ，H.ホークスの『暗黒街の顔役』 (32) など。俳優としては E.ロビンソン，J.キャグニーらが活躍。検察側から暗黒街を描くGメン物の始祖としてはキーリーの『Gメン』 (35) がある。また各国でもこのような暗黒街を描く映画が多い。日本では黒沢明が『酔いどれ天使』 (48) などで第2次世界大戦後のやくざ像を批判的に描いた。今日では娯楽的アクション映画として制作されている。
