Ili [river] - Ili

Japanese: イリ[川] - イリ

A river that flows through both China and Kazakhstan on the northern side of the Tianshan Mountains. It joins the Tekes and Kungas rivers about 100 km east of the Chinese city of Yining, flows west through the Ili Basin in the northwestern part of China's Xinjiang region, enters Kazakhstan, and empties into Lake Balkhash. It is about 1,500 km long. In the middle reaches near Yining, it is widely used for irrigation. This area has been a transportation route connecting the Dzungaria and Syr Darya basins since ancient times.

天山山脈北面，中国とカザフスタン両国を流れる川。中国領伊寧の東方約100kmでテケス川，クンゲス川を合わせ，中国の新疆地方北西部のイリ盆地を西に流れてカザフスタン領に入り，バルハシ湖に注ぐ。全長約1500km。中流域の伊寧付近では広く灌漑(かんがい)に利用されている。この地域は古来ジュンガリアとシル・ダリヤ流域を結ぶ交通路であった。
