Grotefend - Georg Friedrich Grotefend

A German scholar of ancient linguistics. He pioneered Assyriology by deciphering the cuneiform characters unearthed at Persepolis in Iran using the names of Persian kings as clues. He also studied the geography and history of ancient Italy, and advanced research into the Umbrian and Oscian languages. His main work is "A Guide to Cuneiform Writing: Describing the Process of Deciphering the Persepolis Inscriptions."

ドイツの古代言語学者。イランのペルセポリス出土の楔形(くさびがた)文字を、ペルシアの諸王の名を手がかりに解読するなど、アッシリア学に先鞭(せんべん)をつけた。また、古代イタリアの地理や歴史の研究を行い、ウンブリア語、オスキ語などの研究を進めた。主著に『ペルセポリス碑文の解読過程を述べる楔形文字指針』がある。
