It is the sixth river on the Korean peninsula, flowing into the Yellow Sea (called the West Sea in the Korean peninsula) of Korea (Republic of Korea). It is 401 km long and has a drainage area of 9,886 square km. It originates at the western foot of Yukjuryeong in the Sobaek Mountains in Jangsu County, North Jeolla Province, flows north, meanders through mountain gorges, bypasses Okcheon, Gongju, and Buyeo, changes course to the southwest, and empties into the Yellow Sea north of Gunsan. The drainage basin includes the Daejeon Basin, Cheongju Basin, and Nonsan Plain. It is navigable from the mouth to Buyang, 130 km upstream. Gongju and Buyeo, which are in the basin, were the ancient capitals of Baekje and have many ruins.
