A warm-water fish (illustration) of the family Porgonidae in the order Perciformes, it is widely distributed from southern Japan to the East and South China Seas, Sri Lanka, and the Red Sea, and lives in coastal reefs. It is called Kosodaigai in Tokyo, Misaki in Kanagawa Prefecture, and Wakaura in Wakayama Prefecture, but is called Ogondai in Kominato in Chiba Prefecture, Kaigre in Tanabe in Wakayama Prefecture and Futagijima in Mie Prefecture, Korodai in Kushimoto in Wakayama Prefecture and Uwajima in Ehime Prefecture, Kochidai in Toyama Prefecture, and Tomomoli in Miyazaki Prefecture. Like other species in this genus (Black Sweetlips, Asian Sweetlips, Yellow Sweetlips, etc.), the body color and markings of this species change significantly as it grows.

スズキ目イサキ科の暖海性魚類（イラスト）で，南日本から東シナ海，南シナ海，スリランカ，紅海まで広く分布し，沿岸の岩礁域にすむ。東京都，神奈川県三崎，和歌山県和歌浦などではコショウダイと呼ぶが，千葉県小湊でオゴンダイ，和歌山県田辺や三重県二木島でカイグレ，和歌山県串本や愛媛県宇和島でコロダイ，富山県でコチダイ，宮崎県でトモモリなどと呼ぶ。本種は本属の他種(クロコショウダイ，アジアコショウダイ，コロダイなど)と同様成長に伴い体色，斑紋が著しく変化する。
