Globule - globule

A type of dark nebula. The space between stars is not a complete vacuum, and matter exists in the form of plasma, atoms, molecules, and interstellar dust. These are collectively called interstellar matter. Interstellar dust exists in dense regions and absorbs starlight, so when a sky photograph is taken, it appears as if there are no stars. Such regions are called dark nebulae, and their sizes range from one-thousandth of a light-year in diameter to more than 10 light-years in diameter. Among them, those that are spherical in shape and less than a few light-years in diameter are called globules. Within 1000 light-years from the sun, about 10 large dark nebulae, about 100 globules with a diameter of about 1 light-year, and many smaller globules have been discovered. These are mainly found beside or in front of bright nebulae where stars are being born. Dark nebulae and globules slowly collapse into protostars, and eventually the light from those stars evaporates the interstellar dust, making the stars visible. It is believed that large dark nebulae give birth to many large stars, while globules give birth to small stars with masses similar to that of the Sun. Globules are like the eggs of stars.

暗黒星雲の一種。星と星の間の空間はまったくの真空ではなく、物質はプラズマ、原子、分子、星間塵(じん)という形で存在している。これらを総称して星間物質という。星間塵は密度の高い領域に存在し星の光を吸収してしまうので、天空の写真をとると星がないように見える。このような領域を暗黒星雲といい、その大きさは、直径1000分の1光年のものから10光年以上のものにまでわたっている。そのうち、形が球状で、大きさが直径数光年以下のものをグロビュールとよぶ。太陽から1000光年内で、およそ10個程度の大きい暗黒星雲と、100個程度の直径1光年前後のグロビュール、そして多数のより小さいグロビュールが発見されている。これらはおもに星が誕生しつつある明るい星雲のかたわらや前面でみつけられている。暗黒星雲やグロビュールはゆっくりつぶれて原始星になり、やがてその星からの光で星間塵は蒸発してしまい、星が見えるようになる。大きい暗黒星雲からは質量の大きい星が多数生まれ、グロビュールからは太陽程度の質量の小さい星が単独に生まれると考えられている。グロビュールはいわば星の卵である。
