Born: May 11, 1801 in Paris Died: June 24, 1875. Fontainebleau. French architect. Studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, won the Prix de Rome in 1824, and studied in Rome from 1825 to 1830. Known for his rational architectural style and use of new building materials such as iron. His main works are the Sainte-Geneviève Library in Paris (1843-50) and the reading room and stacks at the National Library of France (1862-68), both of which are noted for their spatial harmony, skillful use of iron, and interior expression.
