French historian. Graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Paris. Influenced by F. Simien, he began to study economic and social history, and in his two works, An Essay on the Analysis of Price and Income Fluctuations in 18th-Century France (2 volumes, 1933) and The French Economic Crisis at the End of the Ancien Régime and the Beginning of the Revolution (1944), he provided a solid methodological foundation for the analysis of economic fluctuations while also conducting thorough analyses of their social impact, successfully positioning the outbreak of the Great Revolution in the context of the relationship between social structure and economic fluctuations.

フランスの歴史家。パリ大学法学部出身。F.シミアンの影響下に経済史･社会史の研究へと進み，《18世紀フランスにおける物価ならびに所得の変動分析試論》2巻(1933)，《アンシャン･レジーム末期ならびに革命初期におけるフランス経済の危機》(1944)の2著により，経済変動の分析に確固とした方法的基礎を与えると同時に，その社会的影響についても綿密な分析を行い，大革命の勃発を社会構造と経済変動の関連の中に位置づけることに成功した。
