Later, when Zeus ordered him to judge the dispute between the three goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite for the honor of the most beautiful goddess, he declared the victory to Aphrodite, who had promised to marry the most beautiful woman in the world, and abandoned his wife, the nymph Oinone, and, under the protection of the goddess, kidnapped Helen, the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. In the Trojan War that was caused by this, he fought Menelaus in a single combat and shot Achilles, the strongest hero on the Greek side, but was shot by Philoctetes with a poisoned arrow from Heracles, and returned to Oenone, who knew the cure, but she refused to treat him and he died. …
