Japanese: 綽名(渾名) - あだな

A name given to a particular person by others in addition to their real name, depending on their appearance, physique, character, behavior, or history. Some names express affection, while others contain a mocking meaning. "Ada" means "other," and unlike a nickname (nickname), it has a historical connection with the character (azana), and it can be said that the character has become the nickname. A character is in principle a name given to oneself in addition to one's real name, and the name (real name) is used to refer to one's lord or father, while the character is used to refer to others.

他人が特定の人に対して，その顔だち･体つき･性質･行動･経歴などによって，実名のほかにつけて呼ぶ名前。親愛の情をあらわしたものや嘲笑（ちようしよう）の意を含んだものがある。〈あだ〉は〈他〉の意味で，徒名（あだな）(仇名)とは違い，字（あざな）と歴史的に結びつく側面があり，むしろ，字があだ名となってきたといえる。字は実名のほかに原則として自称する名前で，名(実名)は君･父に対してのものであり，他人に向かっては字をいうのである。
