Born: April 1, 1899 in Osaka
Died May 25, 1977. Protestant theologian from Kyoto. After graduating from Tokyo Prefectural First Middle School (1916), he went on to study at the Doshisha University Theology Department. During his middle school years, he was troubled by problems in life and converted to Christianity. In 1922, upon graduation, he went to America to study at the University of Chicago and Union Theological Seminary. After returning to Japan, he became a lecturer and professor at his alma mater. During that time, he was awarded a PhD in Theology from Union Theological Seminary. He specialized in church history and doctrinal history. After World War II, he became a professor at Kyoto University. His main works are Studies on Origen (43) and Problems of Ontology in Christian Thought (69).

プロテスタント神学者。東京府立一中を卒業 (1916) 後，同志社大学神学部に進んだ。中学時代人生問題に悩み，キリスト教に入信。 1922年，卒業と同時にアメリカに留学，シカゴ大学，ユニオン神学校に学んだ。帰国後母校講師，教授となる。その間ユニオン神学校より神学博士号を授与された。教会史，教理史を専攻。第2次世界大戦後京都大学教授。主著『オリゲネス研究』 (43) ，『キリスト教思想における存在論の問題』 (69) 。
