A floating island in the northwest of Yamaguchi Prefecture, separated from the Senzaki Strait by the Sea of Japan. It belongs to Nagato City. The entire island has been designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument. It is connected to the central city of Senzaki by the Aomi Bridge. The north shore has a magnificent topography, mainly consisting of sea cliffs. It is the main part of Kita-Nagato Coast Quasi-National Park, and is home to high cliffs, Byobuiwa, Golden Cave, Sekimon, Juroku Rakan, and Shimamimon Gate. There are many calm inlets. There is a Natsumikan mandarin tree in Dainichibi, a historic site and natural monument, as well as a whale grave (historic site) and whale death register in Tsuruura. 山口県北西部,日本海側で仙崎水道をへだてて浮ぶ島。長門市に属する。全島が名勝および天然記念物に指定されている。仙崎の中心市街地とは青海大橋で連絡。北岸には海食崖を主とするみごとな地形が発達。高崖,屏風岩,黄金洞,石門,十六羅漢,島見門などがあり,北長門海岸国定公園の主要部をなす。波静かな入江が多い。史跡で天然記念物の大日比のナツミカン原樹や,通浦の鯨墓 (史跡) と鯨過去帳がある。仙崎から遊覧船が出航。面積 14.6km2。人口 3457 (1996) 。
