[1] [Name] A shrub of the Saxifragaceae family. Native to India, Malaysia and China, it was introduced to Japan in 1722 in Nagasaki. The trunk is about two meters tall. The leaves are lanceolate and opposite, about 20 centimeters long. The flowers grow densely in cone-shaped spikes, white or pale purple, and bloom all year round. The fruits are berries that ripen green. The roots are called "Jozan" and are used as an antipyretic for malaria. Jozanboku. [1] 〘名〙ユキノシタ科の低木。インド・マレーシア・中国原産で、日本へは享保七年（一七二二）に長崎に渡来した。幹は高さ約二メートル。葉は披針形で対生し長さ二〇センチメートルぐらい。花は多数密生して円錐状の花穂を作り、白または淡紫紅色で周年咲き、果実は液果で青熟する。根を「常山」といいマラリアなどの解熱剤に用いる。じょうざんあじさい。じょうざんぼく。〔いろは字（1559）〕〔本草綱目‐草部・常山・集解〕[補注]古く、コクサギ、クサギまた、ヤマアジサイなどの漢名に当てたが誤用。[2][一] 「こうざん（恒山）」の異称。[二] 中国、漢代、現在の河北省石家荘専区元氏県を中心として置かれた郡名。[三] 中国、漢代にあった関の名。現在の倒馬関で、河北省西部、唐県の西北にあたる。
