A former town in Tome District, northern Miyagi Prefecture. It was once a low-lying marshland downstream of the Hasama River, but after cultivation it has become one of the prefecture's leading rice-producing areas. It is also the prefecture's leading producer of piglets. In April 2005, it merged with Hasama Town, Tome Town, Towa Town, Nakata Town, Toyosato Town, Ishigoe Town, and Minamikata Town in Tome District, and Tsuyama Town in Motoyoshi District, to become a city, Tome City. 51.19 km2 .
