An entertainer who performs Japanese music, especially singing using the shamisen, at a vaudeville theater. During the Bunsei era (1818-30), hauta, yoshiko no bushi, and itako bushi were popular, but during the Tenpo era (1830-44), Dodoitsubo Senka made dodoitsu a successful vaudeville entertainment. In the order of performances at Tokyo vaudeville theaters, musicians generally appear as hizagawari (entertainers who perform right before the main performers). Even in modern times, Tokyo has maintained its tradition of musicians more than Kamigata, and there are more of them. In recent years, well-known musicians include Yanagiya Kohanji, Tachibanaya Yonekura, Yanagiya Mikimatsu, and Shunputei Shijaku.
