...It was no longer called bun, but was called qahwa, after the name of a type of alcoholic beverage. This Arabic word entered Turkey and became kahve, and eventually spread throughout Europe in the 17th century, giving rise to the globally accepted term coffee or cafe. It was introduced to Turkey in 1517 by Selim I's Egyptian expedition, and in 1554 the first magnificent coffee shop, Kahve Khāne, was opened in Istanbul, where citizens flocked to drink it.
