Suetonius - Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus

Suetonius - Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus

A biographer of the early Roman Empire. A friend of Pliny the Younger. Born into a family of Roman knights. He served as secretary to Emperor Hadrian, but after he was fired in 121 (some say 122) due to the displeasure of the emperor, he devoted himself to writing. He lived a fairly long life, but little is known about his later years. From the two surviving works, he gives the impression of being a biographer, but he also wrote in Latin and Greek on a wide range of subjects other than biographies. The Lives of Notables are biographies of poets, grammarians, rhetoricians, orators, and historians, most of which have been lost and only a few remain. The surviving works include those of Terence, Horace, and Lucan. The Lives of Caesars is his major work that has survived almost completely, and is a total of 12 biographies, from Julius Caesar and Augustus, to Tiberius and Domitian. It makes use of materials from the Imperial Archives that were available to him during his time as secretary. Although it lacks historical insight, it is packed with fascinating anecdotes written in a simple style, and was followed by a sequel by Marius Maximus in the early 3rd century.
