A mountain located in central Niigata Prefecture, on the border between Kashiwazaki City and Kakizaki Town (both cities and towns are now part of Joetsu City). Its northern and western foothills face the Sea of Japan. It is 993m above sea level. It has the appearance of a stratovolcano, with deposits of andesite and other rocks, but some say it is not a volcano. On the summit is Yoneyama Yakushi, a shrine said to have the power to pray for rain, and the Edo period book Azumayuki describes the mountain as dividing Joetsugo and Shimoetsugo. It is known for the folk songs Sankaibushi and Yoneyama Jinku. The northern foothills are a scenic spot of Yoneyama Sanri. Trailheads include Yoneyama Station on the Shinetsu Main Line. It belongs to the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. → Related topics Kakizaki [town] | Kashiwazaki [city] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
