Bk. Atomic number 97. Group 3 actinide element with electronic configuration [Rn]5f ⁹ 7s ^2. The fifth transuranium element discovered. Named after the University of California, Berkeley, where it was synthesized. It was obtained in December 1949 by G. T. Seaborg, A. Ghiorso, and others, by bombardment of mg amounts of ²⁴¹ Am with ⁴ He nuclei (alpha particles) accelerated in the 60 in cyclotron at the University of California, Berkeley. ²⁴⁹ Bk is obtained by neutron absorption (in a nuclear reactor) of ²⁴⁸ Cm. Silvery-white metal. Melting point 1259.2 °C. First ionization energy 608 kJ mol ^-1 (6.30 eV). Usual oxidation states 2-4. More than μg amounts of BkCl ₃ , BkOCl, BkO ₂ , and BkO ₃ have been produced. Currently, there are 17 known isotope nuclides in the range of 235 to 254. The alpha-decay nuclide with mass number 247 is the longest-lived, with a half-life of 1380 y. [CAS 7440-40-6]

Bk．原子番号97の元素．電子配置[Rn]5f ⁹7s²の周期表3族アクチノイド元素．5番目に発見された超ウラン元素．この元素が合成されたカリフォルニア大学バークレー校にちなんで命名された．1949年12月，G.T. Seaborg(シーボーグ)，A. Ghiorsoらによって，カリフォルニア大学バークレー校の60 inサイクロトロンで加速した ⁴He 原子核(α粒子)による mg 量の ²⁴¹Am の衝撃で得られた．²⁴⁹Bk は ²⁴⁸Cm の中性子吸収(原子炉中)によって得られる．銀白色の金属．融点1259.2 ℃．第一イオン化エネルギー608 kJ mol^－1(6.30 eV)．通常の酸化数2～4．μg 量以上のBkCl₃，BkOCl，BkO₂，BkO₃などがつくられた．現在，知られている同位体核種は，235～254の範囲に17種．質量数247のα崩壊核種がもっとも長寿命で半減期1380 y．[CAS 7440-40-6]
