van Eyck, H.

…Flemish painter. Also written as Van Eyck. He was believed to be the founder of oil painting in Italy from an early period. His accurate depiction of the texture of the subject and the perspective of space, his use of the 3/4 frontal bust format for portraits, and his use of light coming from the left to flesh out the model are unmatched, making him a solitary painter. He was probably born in Maaseik and died in Bruges. He first served as a miniature painter at the court of the Count of Holland in The Hague. From 1425 onwards, he worked as a court painter and chamberlain for the Duke of Burgundy, and was often sent as an envoy to distant countries, especially in Portugal from 1428 to 1429, where he worked hard to welcome the country's princess Isabella to the bride of his master, Philip the Good. …

…フランドルの画家。ファン･エイクとも記す。早くよりイタリアで油彩画の創始者と信ぜられた。対象の質感や空間の遠近の正確な表現，また肖像画における3/4正面胸像形式の採用と左方から来る光線によるモデルの肉付け等は他者の追随を許さず，孤高の画家ともいえる。おそらくマースエイクMaaseikで生まれ，ブリュージュに没。はじめハーグのホラント伯の宮廷にミニアチュール画家として仕える。1425年以降ブルゴーニュ公の宮廷画家また侍従として活動し，しばしば特使として遠国に派遣され，とくに28‐29年にはポルトガルに滞在し，同国の王女イサベラを主君フィリップ(善良公)の妃として迎えることに尽力した。…
