1881‐1954 Italian politician. He founded the Christian Democratic Party (DC), served as Prime Minister from 1945 to 1953, and determined the direction of postwar Italian politics. Born in Trentino under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he studied at the University of Vienna, then joined the Catholic Social Movement, and in 1911 was elected to the Imperial Diet as a member of the Trento People's Party. After World War I, when Trentino was annexed by Italy, he joined the Italian People's Party led by Sturzo, and in 1921 was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, becoming the leader of the party's parliamentary group.
