Chichibu Night Festival - Chichibuyo Festival

The annual festival is held on December 3rd at Chichibu Shrine in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture. After the morning festival, in the evening, following the shrine procession of portable shrines and sacred horses, floats and kasaboko floats from each town in the old city of Chichibu head from the shrine to the temporary shrine at the "Flower Field". There are four floats, from Miyaji, Kamimachi, Nakamachi, and Motomachi, which have been towns since the early modern period, and two kasaboko floats, from Nakachika and Shimogo, which were rural areas. The towns that put out the floats take turns every year, setting up a stage on the float and performing kabuki. The kasaboko floats are made of long poles erected from the base, with three layers of caps hung from them and flower decorations radiating from the top, and serve as a place for the gods to reside. The flower decorations on the kasaboko floats are also said to protect bountiful harvests. The Yatai festival, along with the Kagura dance of Chichibu Shrine, has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, and in 2016 it was registered as one of the "Yama, Hoko and Yatai Festivals" by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an Intangible World Heritage.

埼玉県秩父市の秩父神社で 12月3日に行なわれる例祭。午前中の例祭のあと，夜に神輿や神馬などの神社の行列に続いて，秩父旧市内各町から出された屋台と笠鉾が神社から「お花畑」の御旅所に向かう。屋台は 4台で，近世以来の町場である宮地（みやぢ），上町（かみまち），中町（なかまち），本町（もとまち）が出し，笠鉾は 2台で，農村部だった中近（なかちか）と下郷（したごう）が出す。屋台を出す町は，毎年順番で屋台に張り出し舞台をつけて歌舞伎を上演する。笠鉾は，土台から長い柱を立てて 3層の笠をかけ，上部から花飾りを放射状につけたもので，神の依代としての性格をもつ。笠鉾の花飾りは，五穀豊穣の守りともされている。屋台行事は，秩父神社の神楽とともに国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されており，2016年，「山・鉾・屋台行事」の一つとして，国際連合教育科学文化機関 UNESCOの世界無形遺産に登録された。
