An old town in Soma County, eastern Fukushima Prefecture. Odaka in the center was the castle town of the Soma clan in the Middle Ages, and in early modern times it was a post station on the Rikuzenhama Kaido road. The Joban Line runs through the town. The town produces rice and vegetables, and also cultivates silkworms and livestock. The Nomaoi Nomakake Shinto ritual is held at the remains of Odaka Castle. In Izumisawa there are the large rock-carved Yakushido stone Buddha (historic site) and Kannondo stone Buddha (historic site). In January 2006, it merged with Haramachi City and Kashima Town in Soma County to become a city, Minamisoma City. 91.95 km2 . Population 13,731 (2003). 福島県東部,相馬郡の旧町。中心の小高は中世,相馬氏の居城地,近世は陸前浜街道の宿駅。常磐線が通じる。米,野菜を産し,養蚕,畜産も行う。小高城跡では野馬追(のまおい)の野馬掛神事が行われる。泉沢に大磨崖(まがい)仏の薬師堂石仏(史跡),観音堂石仏(史跡)がある。2006年1月,原町市,相馬郡鹿島町と合併し市制,南相馬市となる。91.95km2。1万3731人(2003)。
