Bengal leopard cat - bengal yamaneko (English spelling) leopard cat

It is a member of the Felidae family and the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It is found in areas ranging from India to Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, the Ussuri region, the Korean Peninsula, and Tsushima. It lives in forests and shrubs from tropical to polar plains up to 3,000 meters above sea level. Its body length is 36-83 cm, and its tail length is 15-44 cm. Body size and color vary significantly depending on the habitat; the Philippine subspecies, the Palawan leopard cat, P. b. minutus , is very small, its underside is not pure white, and its markings are clearly dark blackish brown, while the Formosan leopard cat , P. b. chinensis , found in Taiwan and China, is medium-sized, short-haired, and has plum blossom-shaped markings, while the Tsushima leopard cat , P. b. euptilurus , found in northeastern China and Tsushima Island, is large, long-haired, pale ochre-colored, and has indistinct reddish brown markings.

They live alone and are mostly nocturnal, but in remote areas they also go out during the day. They roam on the ground and hunt for mice, hares, young roes, pheasants, ptarmigans, and lizards, but they are also said to climb trees to catch squirrels. They also appear near human dwellings and attack chickens. They are good swimmers and often go into water. They have a certain territory, and rest in tree holes, rock crevices, under rocks, and thick brush. The breeding season for northern species such as the Tsushima wildcat is winter, when several males gather around one female, and the males fight fiercely to win the female. The breeding season for southern species seems to be irregular, and young are seen in May in southern India, late March in Hainan Island, and February to March and August to September in Malaysia. 哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目ネコ科の動物。インドからタイ、マレー半島、ボルネオ島、スマトラ島、ジャワ島、フィリピン、中国、台湾、ウスリー地方、朝鮮半島、対馬(つしま)まで分布する。熱帯から寒帯の平地より標高3000メートルまでの森林や低木林に生息する。体長36～83センチメートル、尾長15～44センチメートル。体の大きさや色は生息地によって著しく変化し、フィリピンの亜種パラワンヤマネコP. b. minutusは非常に小形で腹面が純白でなく、斑紋(はんもん)が濃い黒褐色で明瞭(めいりょう)であるが、台湾や中国のタイワンヤマネコP. b. chinensisは中形、短毛で斑紋は梅花状に分裂し、中国東北部や対馬のツシマヤマネコP. b. euptilurusは大形、長毛で体色は淡い黄土色で赤褐色の不鮮明な斑紋がある。

　単独で生活しおもに夜行性であるが、人里離れた所では日中も出歩く。地上を歩き回ってネズミ、ノウサギ、ノロの子、キジ、ライチョウ、トカゲなどを捕食するが、木に登ってリスもとらえるという。また、人家付近にも出没してニワトリを襲ったりする。泳ぎも巧みでよく水に入る。一定の面積の縄張り（テリトリー）をもち、樹洞、岩の割れ目、岩の下、茂ったやぶの中などを休息場とする。繁殖期はツシマヤマネコなど北方に分布するものは冬で、このころ1頭の雌に数頭の雄が集まり、雄どうしは激しく戦って雌を奪い合う。南方に分布するものは繁殖期は不定のようで、インド南部では5月に、海南島では3月下旬に、マレーシアでは2～3月と8～9月に子がみられる。東京で飼育されていた朝鮮半島産のものは交尾期は4月と9、10、12月であった。妊娠期間63～69日で、1産2～4子、普通2子である。子は目が閉じているが、体は綿毛に包まれている。目は生後12～17日で開く。寿命は飼育下で13年である。近縁種でインド南部に分布するサビイロネコP. rubiginosusは体長35～48センチメートル、尾長15～25センチメートルと小形である。インドから東南アジアには大形のスナドリネコP. viverrinusが分布する。
