Born: 23 July 1823, Woodford, Essex [died] November 26, 1896. Lymington, Hampshire. British poet. Worked at the British Museum for nearly 20 years. Published The Angel in the House (4 volumes, 1854-62), a long series of poems celebrating conjugal love. Converted to Catholicism in 1864. In The Unknown Eros and Other Odes (77), he sang of religious and mystical themes. He was friends with Tennyson and Ruskin, and was recognized early on by DG Rossetti, becoming a contributor to the Pre-Raphaelite journal, Germ.
