An old city occupying the western part of the Takanawa Peninsula in northern Ehime Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city center faces the Seto Inland Sea and developed near the mouth of the Tateiwa River, through which the Yosan Line runs. Iyokan and kiwi fruit are cultivated, textile and dyeing industries are carried out, and Kanomine roofing tiles are a specialty. Mount Takanawa has excellent views, and it belongs to the Seto Inland Sea National Park along with Kashima, known for its Kashima Festival. Kazehaya no Ura, which is sung about in the Manyoshu, is said to be the coastline of this area. In January 2005, it was incorporated into Nakajima Town, Onsen County, and Matsuyama City. 102.13 km2 . 愛媛県北部,高縄半島の西部を占める旧市。1958年市制。中心市街は瀬戸内海に臨み,立岩川の河口付近に発達,予讃線が通じる。イヨカン・キウイフルーツ栽培,繊維・染色工業が行われ,鹿峰(かのみね)瓦を特産。高縄山は展望がすぐれ,鹿島祭で知られる鹿島とともに瀬戸内海国立公園に属する。万葉集にうたわれた風早の浦は,この地の海岸といわれる。2005年1月温泉郡中島町と松山市へ編入。102.13km2。2万8814人(2003)。
