Asturias (English spelling) Asturias, Miguel Ángel

Japanese: アストゥリアス(英語表記)Asturias, Miguel Ángel
Asturias (English spelling) Asturias, Miguel Ángel
Born: October 19, 1899 in Guatemala City
Died: June 9, 1974, Madrid. Guatemalan novelist, poet, and diplomat. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967. He studied in France from 1923 to 1930, and studied ancient Mayan culture at the University of Paris, where he was also influenced by Surrealism. Based on these studies and his childhood experiences, he published Leyendas de Guatemala (1930), which was highly praised by Valéry and others in France and Spain, and marked the start of his subsequent creative career as a member of the "indigenous culture" movement. In "His Excellency the President" (46), he wrote in his unique and powerful style about the process in which the oppression of a dictator destroys people from within, set in a small Central American country. In "Hombres de maíz" (49), he wrote about the reality of Latin American indigenous peoples (Indians) who have lived for thousands of years by cultivating corn, losing their ties to the land as big capital takes it away from them, and gradually becoming corrupt. His subsequent works include "Viento fuerte" (50), "The Green Pope" (54), "Weekenden Guatemala" (55), "Los ojos de los enterrados" (60), and "Mulata de tal" (63). While writing, he also served as ambassador to France.
