A port city in northeastern Sweden near the mouth of the Ume River where it flows into the central Gulf of Bothnia, it is the capital of Västerbotten County. Population 101,000 (1996). Sawmills, carpentry, and pulp mills collect timber from northern Sweden and produce timber, furniture, machinery, wood tar, etc. The average temperature in January is -7.8°C, so the sea freezes over for five months. It has had city status since 1622. It was burned by the Russians in 1720 and occupied in 1809. It suffered a major fire in 1888, but was rebuilt and remains so to this day.
