Monrovia - Monrovia (English spelling)

Monrovia - Monrovia (English spelling)

The capital of Liberia, West Africa. It is located in the west of the country, at the mouth of the St. Paul River. It is a port city facing the Atlantic Ocean and is the political, economic, trade and transportation center of Liberia. It has a population of 479,000 (1999). It was settled and built in 1822 by freed slaves from the United States as the American Colonization Society. It was named after Monroe, the then US president. It developed rapidly after the port facilities were renovated by the US military during World War II. In 1961, African countries, mainly former French colonies, held an international conference here and decided on a moderate pan-Africanist foreign economic policy. For this reason, the countries participating in the conference are called the Monrovia faction. There are industries such as cement, construction materials, furniture, and food processing, as well as an oil refinery. Roberts International Airport is 80 km east.
