Ruby (English notation)

Japanese: ルビ（英語表記）ruby

A typeface used for reading kanji. It was originally the name of a typeface about 5.5 points in size used in the UK. In Japan, furigana was often added to kanji characters written in No. 5 typeface using No. 7 typeface, but since No. 7 typeface was about 5.5 points and almost the same size as ruby, this was called ruby, and eventually furigana came to be called ruby as well. Adding ruby to all kanji characters in a sentence is called "total ruby," while adding ruby to only some of them is called "para-ruby."

ふりがな用の活字のこと。もともとはイギリスにおける約 5.5ポイントの大きさの活字の名称であった。日本では5号活字の漢字の横に7号活字でふりがなをつけることが多かったが，この7号活字が約 5.5ポイントでルビとほぼ同じ大きさであったため，これをルビと呼び，やがてはふりがなをもルビと呼ぶようになった。文中の漢字全部にルビをふるのを「総ルビ」，一部だけにふるのを「ぱらルビ」という。
