A former town in Minamiamabe County, southern Oita Prefecture. Part of the Kyushu Mountains, the town produces mainly cedar, cypress, and shiitake mushrooms, as well as rice and tea, and also produces chestnuts and eggplants. The Nippō Main Line runs through the east, and the west is part of the Sobokatamuki Quasi-National Park. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Saiki City along with the Minamiamabe County villages of Kamiura, Yayoi, Tsurumi, Kamame, Honjō, Naokawa, and Yonemizu. 265.99 km2 . 3,827 people (2003). 大分県南部,南海部(みなみあまべ)郡の旧町。九州山地の一部にあたり,スギ,ヒノキ,シイタケを主産,米作,茶栽培を行い,クリ,ナスも産する。東部に日豊本線が通じ,西部は祖母傾(そぼかたむき)国定公園に属する。2005年3月南海部郡上浦町,弥生町,鶴見町,蒲江町,本匠村,直川村,米水津村と佐伯市へ編入。265.99km2。3827人(2003)。
