A general term for small to medium-sized seabirds belonging to the family Alcidae in the order Charadriiformes, or one of these species. They are mainly found in the North Atlantic and the Bering Sea. About 20 species are known worldwide. Fourteen species have been recorded in Japan, of which seven breed in Japan and the remaining seven are winter birds. Most birds in this family have fat, round bodies and short beaks, but some have flat beaks or beaks with unusual shapes. Many species have appendages on their beaks during the breeding season.
