1701‐85 French administrator and politician. Born into a prominent family in Rennes, where he died. After serving as Chief Attorney at the Rennes High Court, he became Attorney General in 1752. A lawsuit for damages against the Jesuit priest La Valette led to the drafting of a report on the constitution of the Society of Jesus, which led to the expulsion of the Society from the canton, and this led to the expulsion of the Society from all of France in 1764. To fill the gap in secondary education caused by this expulsion, he developed the first theory of national education in the history of education, which was based on a familial view of the state and advocated that the state should seize educational rights. Following the advice of Voltaire, he compiled this in a memorandum in 1763, entitled "Essai ďéducation nationale ou plan ďétudes pour la jeunesse."
