A general term for echinoderms belonging to the order Comatulida of the class crinoids, or another name for the Japanese crinoid. All crinoids live in the sea, and are named for the 10 to 100 whorled fern-like arms they have. Commonly known as komachi. In the center of the body is a small, rounded part that houses the digestive tract, and the mouth and anus open on the top of the body. 20 to 50 root-like cirri grow from the underside of the body, and these are used to hang on to rocks and live.
