A town in Mogami County in northern Yamagata Prefecture, located in the upper reaches of the Sakegawa River, a tributary of the Mogami River. Its center is the Mamuro River, through which the Ou Main Line runs, and it developed as a small castle town. It is surrounded by extensive forests, and the town is dedicated to agriculture and forestry. It also cultivates rice, livestock, and sericulture.
