A red seaweed of the family Cerataceae that grows on rocks in the upper intertidal zone, resembling dark red somen noodles. It is soft, string-like, and slimy. The body is 1.5-2 mm thick and 10-20 cm long, and some branches into several at the base, while others do not branch at all. It grows from winter to spring and disappears in summer. It is known to spend the summer as a minute asexual filament. It is found along the coasts of Japan, except in areas strongly influenced by warm currents, and is also found in the Korean Peninsula, China, and Sakhalin.
