Hideo Oguma

Japanese: 小熊秀雄 - おぐまひでお
Hideo Oguma

Poet. Born in Otaru, Hokkaido. After graduating from a high school in Karafuto (Sakhalin), he experienced various odd jobs, and in 1922 (Taisho 11), he joined the Asahikawa Newspaper Company, from which time he began writing poems and children's stories. In 1928, he settled in Tokyo, and wrote poetry enthusiastically despite illness and poverty, and in 1931 (Showa 6), he joined the Proletarian Poets Association. He was an avid reader of Russian literature such as Pushkin, and maintained a flexible and indomitable attitude in an authoritarian era, demonstrating a unique way of being in proletarian literature with his poems written in a "talkative" style and his diverse criticism of his contemporaries. In 1935, he published "Oguma Hideo Poetry Collection" and "Flying Sled." While he wrote essays on art and painters, he also left behind unique paintings (mainly sketches). He participated in the founding of the magazines "Enju" and "Gendai Bungaku" and was active in the field, but died of pulmonary tuberculosis.
