A lively dance in 2/4 time that was popular in the late 19th century. The third eighth note of each measure is emphasized. The name is said to come from the Czech word polska (Polish girl). Its origins are unknown, but since it appeared in Prague in 1837, it quickly spread throughout the world and became an indispensable part of balls and dance halls. Johann Strauss and his son wrote many polkas in addition to waltzes. Smetana is also known for incorporating the rhythm of this dance into his opera The Bartered Bride (premiered in 1866) and various other works. 名称はチェコ語のpolska(ポーランド娘)に由来するといわれる。
