Joseph Roumanille

Joseph Roumanille
1818‐91
A modern poet and writer of Provencal (Occitan) in southern France. He lamented the "dying of the elegant language of Provence," and first published a collection of poems, "Daisies" (1847). His next collection, "Les Demoiselles de Provence" (1851), included not only Roumanille's own works, but also many works by his contemporary poets. This collection of poems "recovered the lost ground of the southern French language," and played a major role in uniting poets to found the literary revival movement, "Felibrige."
