Merodachbaladan II

King of Babylon. Reigned 721-710, 703 BC. His correct name was Marduk-apla-iddina. At that time Assyria had come to dominate all of Mesopotamia, but Marduk-baladan appears in Assyrian sources as a powerful leader of the Chaldeans who were troubling Assyria toward the end of the reign of Tiglath-pileser III (reigned 744-727 BC). After the death of Shalmaneser V (reigned 726-722 BC), he took advantage of the internal conflict over the succession to the throne in Assyria to ascend to the throne of Babylon.

バビロン王。在位，前721‐前710，前703年。正しくはマルドゥク･アプラ･イッディナMarduk‐apla‐iddina。当時のアッシリアはメソポタミア全域に支配を及ぼすほどになっていたが，メロダクバラダンはティグラトピレセル3世(在位，前744‐前727)の治世の終りころからアッシリアを悩ますカルデア人の有力首長としてアッシリア側史料に現れる。そしてシャルマネセル5世(在位，前726‐前722)の死後アッシリアに王位継承をめぐる内紛が起こったのに乗じてバビロン王位に就く。
