Iwan (English spelling)

Japanese: イーワーン（英語表記）īwān

In Islamic architecture, this refers to an open-fronted hall covered with a half dome or barrel vault. Its origins date back to ancient Persian architecture. In Persian mosques from the 11th century onwards, a style in which an iwan was placed in the centre of each of the four sides of a courtyard and an arcade-like corridor connecting these became common. This style is called a "chahar iwan" (four iwans). Iwans are often placed facing the courtyard, but they are also used at main entrances, and are densely designed as antechambers that suggest the presence of important rooms at the back.

イスラム建築における，半ドーム，バレルボールトなどでおおわれた前面開放型の広間をいう。起源はペルシアの古代建築にまでさかのぼる。 11世紀以降のペルシア系のモスクでは，中庭を構成する四辺の中央にそれぞれイーワーンを配するとともに，これらを結んでアーケード状の回廊をめぐらす形式が普及した。この形式を「チャハル・イーワーン」 (4イーワーン) という。イーワーンは中庭に面して配されることが多いが，主要な入口部分にも使われ，奥に重要な部屋のあることを暗示する前室空間として，密度の高い意匠がなされる。
