Kanze Shigetsugu

The founder of the school, Kan'ami Kiyotsugu (1333-84), was the adopted third son of Yamada Sarugaku Minodayu, who was apparently active in the southern part of the Nara Basin during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. He was commonly known as Saburo and had the stage name Kanze. Kan'ami belonged to the Yuzaki troupe, one of the four Yamato Sarugaku troupes, which was an organization for performing the Shiki Sanban (Okina) role in the Shinto Sarugaku at Tonomine Temple and Kasuga Kofuku Temple, and played an active role as a tayu (master carpenter's tamate), the representative of the Noh group. The name of the troupe, Kanze, comes from his stage name. …

…(1)能のシテ方の流派名。流祖の観阿弥清次（かんあみきよつぐ）(1333‐84)は，南北朝ころ奈良盆地南部で活動したらしい山田猿楽美濃大夫の養子の三男で，通称三郎，芸名を観世という。観阿弥は多武峰（とうのみね）寺や春日興福寺の神事猿楽に《式三番》(《翁》)を務めるための組織であった大和猿楽四座の一つ結崎（ゆうざき）座に所属し，演能集団の代表者である大夫(棟梁の為手（して）)として活躍した。座名の観世は彼の芸名に由来する。…
