Japanese: 園家 - そのけ

The family is a descendant of the Nakamikado family, a branch of the Jimyoin family, and descended from the Urin family. They are descendants of Fujiwara no Michinaga's son, Yorimoto. Their ancestor was Jimyoin Michimoto's grandson, Sangi Motouji, who was said to have been an expert with knives, and there is an anecdote about his grandson, Motofuji, as the head priest of the garden, in the Tsurezuregusa. During the Edo period, Sangi Motonari was posthumously awarded the title of Left Minister, as his daughter, Mitsushi, served in the harem of Emperor Gomizunoo and was the birth mother of Emperor Gokomyo. Motonari's son, Motonari, also became Dainagon as Emperor Reigen's maternal grandfather, and was posthumously awarded the title of Left Minister.

藤原氏北家の流れで中御門家の門流，持明院家支流。家柄は羽林家。藤原道長の子頼宗の後胤。鎌倉時代初めに持明院通基の孫参議基氏を祖とする。その孫基藤は庖丁の名人と伝えられ，《徒然草》にも園の別当入道として逸話を残している。江戸時代に，参議基任は，その女光子が後水尾天皇の後宮に侍し，後光明天皇の生母であることから，没後に左大臣を贈られ，基任の子基音も霊元天皇の外祖父として大納言になり，没後左大臣を贈られた。
