A county in northeastern Romania. The opposite bank of the Tisza River is Ukraine. Its area is 6,215 km2, and its population is 540,000 (1994). It is made up of 7 cities, 62 towns, and 227 villages, and its main industries are forestry and mining. Its capital is Baia Mare (population 150,000, 1994). The Maramures and Rodna Mountains, which are part of the Eastern Carpathians, run through the county, and most of the area, except for the basin areas of the Tisza River and its tributaries and the Someş River basin, is mountainous, with an elevation of 1,000 to 2,300 m.
