The largest freshwater lake in South America. It is located on the Altiplano plateau in the central Andes and straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia. The lake surface is 3,812 meters above sea level, has an area of 8,372 ^km2 , and a maximum depth of 281 meters, but the water level fluctuates greatly due to evaporation. It is rich in fish. Unique reed boats (balsa) are used for transportation and fishing on the lake, and some people live on floating islands made of reeds. Copacabana, a peninsula in the center of the lake, is a sacred place for Indians. Nearby are ruins of the pre-Inca Tiahuanaco culture.

南米最大の淡水湖。アンデス山脈中部の高原アルチプラノにあり，ペルーとボリビアの国境にまたがる。湖面標高3812m，面積8372km²，最大水深281mであるが，蒸発のため水位の変化が激しい。魚類が豊富。湖上交通と漁業には独特の葦舟（バルサ）が用いられ，アシで作った浮島の上で生活する人びとがいる。湖の中央部の半島コパカバーナはインディオの聖地。付近にプレインカのティアワナコ文化の遺跡がある。
