Narcissus (Daffodil) - Narcissus (English spelling)
Although this name refers to the entire genus Narcissus in the Amaryllidaceae family, in a narrow sense it refers to N. tazetta var. chinensis , which grows wild on the warm coasts of Japan. This parent species is said to be native to the Canary Islands, and was introduced to Japan from China via Europe. It has been cultivated since ancient times, and there are many horticultural varieties. It produces several flat, linear leaves from an egg-shaped bulb underground, and in January and February, an upright flower stalk 20 to 30 cm high grows between the leaves, and produces several flowers horizontally. There are six white tepals that open flat, and the lower part is long and tubular. A dark yellow cup-shaped paracorolla is found at the opening of the tepals. In addition to double flowers, there are also varieties with green and pale yellow flowers. There are many other species of daffodils native to southern Europe. There are N. jonquilla , which has yellow flowers, N. pseudo - narcissus , which has large flowers and a thick cylindrical corona, and N. poeticus , which has a red edge to the corona. The English word narcissus refers specifically to the pseudo-narcissus species, and daffodil refers to the daffodil species.
