Born: November 4, 1896 in Talbon Died: June 14, 1971. Quezon City. Philippine politician. After graduating from the Philippine Law School in 1923, he served as a teacher, a member of the Philippine Congress, and a local governor before serving as a senator from 1941 to 1953. During the Japanese occupation of the country during World War II, he organized a resistance movement. In 1953, he was nominated as vice presidential candidate by the National Party, and served as vice president and foreign minister under President R. Magsaysay. In March 1957, he became president after the president's sudden death, and was reappointed in the November election. In the 1961 presidential election, he lost to Vice President D. Macapagal.
