For example, if there are a lot of mononuclear cells, it is diagnosed as viral, if there are a lot of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, it is diagnosed as bacterial, and if there are a lot of eosinophils, it is diagnosed as allergic.

Eye discharge is sticky and uncomfortable, and it makes it difficult to see, so wipe it away gently with tissue paper or cotton dipped in water. After that, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and keep them clean.

　結膜炎の眼脂には、さらっとした水のような（漿液性(しょうえきせい)）眼脂、ねっとりとした（粘液性）眼脂、クリーム状（膿性(のうせい)）眼脂などの種類があります。

　漿液性眼脂はウイルス性結膜炎で多く、粘液性眼脂はアレルギー性で多く、膿性は細菌感染で多いといえます。ちなみに膿性眼脂がどんどん出るような状態を膿漏眼(のうろうがん)と呼びます。

　しかし、これらはあくまで傾向であり、眼脂の性状だけで結膜炎の原因を特定できるわけではありません。眼脂を顕微鏡で調べ、含まれる白血球細胞の種類を特定できれば、結膜炎の原因をある程度特定できます。たとえば、単核球が多ければウイルス性、多核白血球が多ければ細菌性、好酸球が多ければアレルギー性などと診断します。

　眼脂が出ていると、ネバネバして不快ですし、物が見にくくなりますから、水で濡らしたティッシュペーパーやコットンで軽くふき取るようにします。そのあとは、石鹸でしっかり手を洗い、清潔を心がけましょう。
