Anthony is depicted as an old man with a beard and wearing a hooded monk's robe. He is holding a T-shaped cross called the Antoninian cross, where the T (Greek tau) is thought to stand for God (theos). This cross is sometimes worn in blue on the shoulder of the saint's outer garment.

...The cross with two lines crossing diagonally is called an Andrew's cross. (2) A T-cross, which is a regular cross with a long lower line and a missing upper line, or a Tau cross (or Antoninian cross) because it is the same shape as the Greek letter T (tau). The origin of this cross is said to be the Egyptian cross (or crux ansata), which had a circular handle on top. In Egypt, the ankh, a symbol of life, was held in the hands of gods, kings, priests, and others, and functioned as a talisman that bestowed immortality.
